LINEAR ELASTIC PLATE ELEMENTS IN SOME APPLICATIONS WILL NOT PRODUCE ACCURATE RESULTS. THIS IS DUE TO THE LIMITED CAPABILITIES OF LINEAR ELASTIC ELEMENT FORMULATIONS AND PROCESSORS WHEN COMPARED TO THE ADVANCED FEATURES OF NON LINEAR MES. THE FOLLOWING SERIES OF SLIDES WILL DEMONSTRATE A COMMON ERROR THAT STUDENTS OF FEA WILL ENCOUNTER DURING AN ANALYSIS OF A SIMPLIFIED STEEL PLATE HOPPER MODEL, SUBJECTED TO OUT OF PLANE FORCES THAT CREATE MEMBRANE STRESSES AND FLEXURAL STRESSES. THE FIRST SLIDE BELOW SHOWS AN ANALYSIS FROM AN ACTUAL FORENSIC CASE, PERFORMED BY AN INEXPERIENCED ENGINEER USING LINEAR PLATE ELEMENTS. THE OBVIOUSLY INACCURATE RESULTS WERE REPORTED TO THE CLIENT AND ENTERED INTO THE COURT RECORD. THE SECOND SLIDE PRESENTS THE CORRECT RESULTS. THE CORRECTED ANALYSIS WAS PERFORMED USING THE NON-LINEAR M. E. S. PROCESSOR AND ORIGINAL SHELL ELEMENTS.
